We measure balance, strength and how you walk.
Staying steady on your own stairs, and staying out of the fall statistics. We measure fall risk instead of eyeballing it, then train it down.
What It Is
Being careful is what sensible people do after a scare. Slow down. Hold the rail. Skip the stairs. It feels like safety, and for a week or two it is.
Then the trade shows up. Muscle you stop asking for gets weaker. Balance you stop challenging gets narrower. The world shrinks to the rooms you trust, and the next stumble happens on ground that used to be nothing.
Geriatric physical therapy goes the other direction, on purpose and with support in reach. Strength is trainable at any age. So is balance, because balance is a skill your body either practices or loses. We measure what you can do, ask for a little more than comfortable, and build from there. Fourteen years across acute care and skilled nursing is where your therapist learned how much is safe to ask. That is not accepting decline. That is arguing with it.

What It Helps
Balance and strength are trainable at any age. Losing them is not something you have to accept.

Why It Works
Stairs without planning the whole route.
Getting out of a low chair unaided.
Standing long enough to cook dinner.
Less dread about the next uneven sidewalk.
Pairs Well With
Questions, Answered
No. Muscle and balance still respond to training in your eighties and nineties, the same way they always did, just from a different starting point. Age changes the dose, not the mechanism. What matters more than the number is what you can do today and what you want back. That is what gets measured first.
A fall is a reason to start, not a reason to stop. It tells us something specific gave way: strength, balance, blood pressure, vision, footwear, or a hazard at home. We test for it instead of guessing. Balance work happens with support within reach, and the support only comes away when your body has earned it. You work one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, every visit, so somebody is always watching how you respond.
It should leave you tired, not wrecked. Sessions run in short bouts with real rest between them, because that is how older muscle gets stronger without you paying for it the next day. Say a set felt like too much and the dose changes that visit, not next month. Not sure whether this is right for you? Call us at (973) 453-0488.
