IASTM in Morris Plains.

A smooth-edged tool worked over the skin to reach restriction that hands alone cannot get under. Nothing pierces, and it is always followed by movement.

Soft tissue Scar mobility Request My Appointment

What It Is

A smooth edge. Nothing pierces.

IASTM stands for instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization. The instrument is a smooth-edged stainless steel tool, shaped to follow the curve of a shin, a forearm, a shoulder. It is worked over lotioned skin, along the grain of the tissue. Nothing goes through the skin at any point.

The tool does one thing hands cannot do as precisely. It concentrates pressure into a small area, so your therapist can feel exactly where tissue glides and where it grabs, then work that restriction and not the whole region. It also gets under scar tissue and thickened fascia that fingers spread their force across.

So it is not a deep-tissue massage: a massage relaxes an area, IASTM targets one restriction found in your evaluation. And it is not dry needling, which puts a needle into muscle. IASTM stays entirely on the surface of your skin. If you arrived here from a needling search, that is the difference. One more thing worth knowing: it never goes out alone. Tissue that gets freed and then never retrained tightens straight back, so the tool is always followed by movement in the same visit.

What It Helps

Where IASTM helps most.

Some restriction sits deeper than hands can reach. An instrument gets under it, then movement locks the change in.

What A Session Looks Like

Three steps, one visit.

1

We find the tissue that won’t glide.

2

The tool works that spot, over the skin.

3

Then you move, so the change holds.

Why It Works

Four things you get out of it.

Motion back in a stiff, scarred area.

Tissue that glides instead of grabbing.

Progress when stretching alone has stalled.

Change that lasts, because movement follows.

Questions, Answered

IASTM, answered straight.

Over a restricted spot it feels intense, in the way pressing on a bruise feels intense, and it eases as the tissue gives. Most people land on uncomfortable but satisfying. You set the ceiling: say the word and the pressure comes down. This is one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, every visit, so the person holding the tool is the person watching your face.

Some pink or red in the area afterwards is normal, and it usually settles within a day. That is blood flow, not damage. Bruising is not the goal and it is not the proof that anything worked. If you mark easily, or you take a blood thinner, say so before we start and the pressure and technique change to suit your skin.

No. Nothing goes through your skin during IASTM. Dry needling inserts a needle into muscle. IASTM glides a smooth-edged tool across the surface of the skin, on lotion, while the tissue underneath moves. Different tool, different technique, no penetration at all.
