She measures, tests and loads the joint.
Shoulders, knees, hips and backs, assessed mechanically instead of guessed at. Find the joint that stopped doing its job and the pain stops being a mystery.
What It Is
Orthopedic therapy is physical therapy for the moving parts: joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. It’s for pain with a mechanical reason behind it, which is most pain that shows up when you move a certain way.
So the exam is mechanical too. She measures range, tests strength, loads the joint in specific directions, and watches how you move under that load. That’s how a vague ache becomes a named finding. A named finding becomes a plan with an endpoint.
Rest and anti-inflammatories aren’t wrong. They’re incomplete. They quiet the pain signal while the mechanical cause sits there unchanged, and tissue that goes unloaded gets weaker, not stronger. Which is why resting it so often ends the same way: the pain comes back the first time you ask the joint to work.
A named finding, not a guess
What It Helps
Most joint pain has a mechanical cause. Find the cause and the pain stops being mysterious.

Usually not, and waiting on one costs you weeks you can’t get back. A hands-on mechanical exam shows how the joint moves, what load it tolerates, and which motion reproduces your pain. Imaging can’t show any of that. If something in the exam points to imaging, your therapist will tell you plainly. Otherwise we start now, instead of letting the joint stiffen while you wait.
Loaded correctly, yes. It’s how tissue gets stronger. The whole skill is in the dose: enough to build, not enough to flare. She tests where that line sits for you, starts under it, and moves it as the joint earns more. You’re one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, every visit, so the load is set by someone watching you lift it.
You get an answer at your evaluation, not an open-ended schedule. Your plan has an endpoint, and you’ll know what has to happen before you reach it, phase by phase: Pain, Prime, Perform, Prevent. Coverage differs by plan, so we verify your exact benefits before your first session and there’s no surprise on your bill. Call us at (973) 453-0488 with anything you want answered first.
